Velcade & dexamethasone

by maureen napoli on Wed Oct 27, 2010 10:07 pm

Paul my husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2006 and has been in partial remission till now. His treatment being VAD, stem cell, thalidomide with predisalone In July his multiple myeloma count rose, so changed to Revlimid & dex. For 3 months, his count was still rising. He is to start on Velcade & dex in 2 weeks. Has anyone been down this same track & has Velcade worked? Interested to hear some feed back. Maureen

Hello Maureen, sorry to hear of your husband's relapse. Everyone is different and responds differently to all the treatments, but Velcade has an extremely high success rate. It really is a home run / miracle drug for multiple myeloma. How old is your husband? Did he experience bad side effects from the Revlimid?

My father has multiple myeloma (iga), Stage 3 with bone damage, diagnosed three years ago. He is 80 years old. His first treatment was Velcade (with Dex steriod sometimes, on & off) - and after about only 3 or 4 weeks, he had a huge response. The Velcade dropped his protein (iga) number from 3400 (!) down to 400 in that short time. Shortly after the count was down to 100 - and he has remained pretty much stable ever since. Not remission, but just points away. He has been on Velcade straight for 3 years - and it is still working. For most people, the side effects are not bad at all. His is diarreah, and a little neuropathy in his fingers. Lately his numbers are creeping up a little bit, but just in very small increments and he is still in the "safe" range, 3 years later. It wont work forever, but for him, it's worked for a long time. He leads a very normal life. I wish you the best of luck and hope that Velcade can be that magic treatment for your husband. I think there's a pretty good chance - most people respond well to it.

Hi Maureen,

My partner dx in 2007 had a relapse in summer 2009. He took Revlimid at first, bad then got a very bad rash and Rev had to be stopped. In Feb 2010 MRI showed the multiple myeloma had increased into the bones and he started with Velcade once a week, Caelyx / Doxorubicin once a month and low dose Dex twice a week. He didn't have any problems, especially no PN, and - although he had Velcade as first line treatment in 2007, before auto stemm cell transplant - it worked again. After 3 cycles he stopped and MRI in July showed nothing to see inside the bones any more. For the multiple myeloma patients who react to Velcade it's a phantastic drug.

Best wishes for your husband and kind regards from Germany

Caro

I just wanted to say, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Multiple Myeloma, Dec 2008 with broken arm and lesions throughout my body. I went on Velcade for six months and without a stem cell transplant, I have been in remission for a year and a half. I do have nuropothy in my feet, however, it seems in time to be getting better. I wish you the best and hope that you will find comfort hearing others success with Velcade.
