Variation in patient financial burden across U.S. states

I know that Medicaid / Medicare is federal program in the US versus your provincial programs in Canada. But do myeloma patients shoulder less of a medical bill burden (on average) in liberal states such as Vermont, Maine, or New York versus conservative states such as Georgia or Texas?

The reason I ask I remember reading that Vermont had some type of limited assistance programs for those who have cancer.
