two transplants

Hello,

There's a post about this but since it's a different case, I suppose I'm starting another one.

My dad is having kappa multiple myeloma with p53 del-high risk, stage 1. We're at the process of harvesting for two transplants.

I thought that the second transplant would be done a year later or whenever his light chains are back after the first transplant. Nevertheless, doc says that it is not the case. We are scheduled for the second transplant three months after the first transplant. He said that when the myeloma relapses, it would be too late for the second transplant.

Is this common? We are still coping with the clinical depression... and it's much worse when we think about this, especially after knowing that he will be given the VTD regime in between...

It is reasonable to do the two transplants in "tandem." Some centers will advocate that the 2nd transplant is not necessary if complete response is achieved by the first transplant.
