Questions and discussion about smoldering myeloma (i.e., diagnosis, risk of progression, potential treatment, etc.)

Single M-spike is now two M-spikes - significance?

by DexMed on Sun May 25, 2014 1:15 am

I have been smoldering for 4 years under watchful waiting. My M spike has been in 1.4 to 1.6 range. Recent blood work showed M spike in two regions, beta and gamma, with readings of 0.9 each. Does it mean my M spike is .9 + .9 = 1.8.

Can someone explain the significance of M-spike in two regions as opposed to a single number?

Hello DexMed.

My mother has 2 spikes. She is smoldernig. One in beta region and one in the more common gamma region (it is apparently more common with IgA)

It does not affect prognosis or response to treatment nor does it determine the risk of progression.

That is all I know about it, hope it helps in re assuring you :)

That is correct -- we typically add the 2 two but also follow each spike individually as well. For IgA, the m spike can be challenging and it is also very helpful to follow total IgA levels. There is no difference in prognosis.
