Drop in TSH level and multiple myeloma diagnosis

by Irishman on Tue Nov 10, 2015 3:06 pm

I was diagnosed in December 2010 with MGUS. Over the years I have seen my M-spike develop and my kappa / lambda free light chain ratio climb. Per my oncologist, there is evidence in my 24-hour urine and other tests that my myeloma is becoming active. Slowly but surely.

I have had hypothyroidism for several years and am on Synthroid (no generic helped).

Recently I had my annual blood work to check my thyroid. It was at 4.99 with 4.50 being the high end of normal. My endocrinologist increased my scrip from 150 mcg to 175. Now my TSH has gone to the other extreme and is at 0.08 (low is 0.40).

I know this issue (or one similar) has been discussed here in the forum before, but has anyone experienced this swing in their numbers before, or after, a diagnosis of smoldering multiple myeloma or multiple myeloma?

Hi Irishman - I have seen a change in my M spike when lowering the amount of Synthyroid. Over 20 years ago, I was diagnosed w low thyroid (TSH close to 4 with 7 nodules). Fall of 2011 was diagnosed with MGUS and had been taking Synthyroid 112s. When I visited the onc-hem dr for the first time she had my bloodwork retested at Lab Corp and the spike was 1.5.

I researched low thyroid/Synthryoid/MGUS/low TSH and asked my dr to lower my dose. Over the years, I went from 112s to 88s and my spike went from 1.5 to .8. Currently my TSH is the middle of normal and I no longer have any nodules. I always go to the same Lab Corp at the same time of day and take Synthyroid when I wake up. Now, I take an 88 daily and skip every other Sunday. The main difference is on the lower dose is sleeping better. On higher doses had bad insomnia.

Assuming you are are taking on Synthyroid on an empty stomach and wait to eat/drink for 20-30 minutes to enhance absorption? Diane
