Salty taste in mouth - Revlimid? / Allopurinol?

by fetalsono on Thu Aug 21, 2014 12:47 pm

I have been on Revlimid, initially 25 mg and now 10 mg with dex. I was also started on allopurinol. I have a persistent salty taste in my mouth. Is it likely due to either of these drugs?

I was warned about a metallic taste, but this is definitely salty. I assume there is nothing to do about it.

Gee, I 'd start with my latest labs and see what my Chloride, sodium, Potassium, and sugars are showing---then I'd look at the literature re Revlimid and Potassium, --and then the Kidney and loop of Henle--sodium sparing/ sodium depleting drugs--(ie are you taking anything else that would effect your metabolites ?)

I have a metallic taste from Revlimid I'm on a Potassium supp ( 99mgs-2-3/x week) due to the Revlimid. I do retain more fluid and am on a low-dose diuretic--but I don't taste "salty" in my OS. Never have. I have increased exercise....and sweating.

I have also reduced my salt "Diet" to very low levels. My Labs confirm this.

How is your Gout doing-- Responding, I hope ?

Good luck.

I think I would just buy a lime and a bottle of tequila to complete the package ;-)

Multibilly-

I love your response. Maybe the 3 of us could get together and have a Tequila party. I prefer it without the salt, just the lime.

fetalsono-

I've never heard of a salty taste from the drugs, but I don't dismiss your experience. The suggestion to look at all of your other lab test results to see if any of them are out of balance sounds like a good starting point. Have you mentioned it to your oncologist?

I hope you find an answer to your question,

I've had patients complain about metallic taste, bitter taste, loss of taste, "everything tastes like cardboard", but I can't say I've had anyone with "salty" taste on these medications. I agree it's worth checking electrolytes and kidney function labs, but suspect it is just an unusual effect of the drugs.

Unfortunately, there's probably not much to do, but occasionally side effects can diminish as you get more used to the medicines. So I would give it more time and continue to discuss with your oncologist.

Since no one on Revlimid has the 'salty' taste side effect, could it be the allopurinol? My electrolytes - sodium, etc. - are normal.

I've been on Revlimid for 20 months and have had an awful taste since the start. I'm a dentist and I can't describe the taste. I suck on ACT Dry Mouth Lozengers constantly which is the only thing that helps me, even though I can't really describe the taste as dry mouth.

It really is annoying and I wish Multibilly a slight taste so he wouldn't find it so funny.

Fetalsono -

Sorry to hear about the taste side effect you're experiencing. I hope it goes away soon.

You may have missed it, but Dr. Cohen used the plural in this statement,

"I can't say I've had anyone with "salty" taste on these medications"

indicating that he hasn't heard of the particular side effect with either Revlimid or allopurinol.

Multibilly -

Your quip literally made me laugh out loud. I think it's fine to inject some humor into these discussions now and then. When someone in another discussion mentioned she was treating her myeloma with an anti-malarial, and you asked what it was, I was tempted to say "Perhaps she's having a few gin & tonics every day and calling them anti-malarial therapy?" ;)

(As was mentioned in the recent Beacon article, tonic water contains small amounts of quinine, which is an anti-malarial that may have anti-myeloma properties.)

I agree that humor is good. I love Multibilly's contributions to the Beacon. I just wanted to make the point that a constant foul taste is more than just a nuisance (although certainly not near the level as DVT's and secondary cancers, insomnia , diarrhea and constant fatigue).

I asked this question about 6 months ago and only one person responded - Yes. I have this horrible 'salty' taste in my mouth. I have narrowed it down to all of my medicines and it has to be from the Revlimid. It is always there although some days worse than others. Anyone else with the problem and most importantly any solutions.

Thanks
