Tonic water for spasm/pain?

by AnnM on Mon Feb 17, 2014 10:52 am

Husband is having breakthrough pain in his back, which comes with movement. He is on both morphine ER, 15mg, and IR, 15mg. 2 IR does not stop the intermittent pain so his PA suggested tonic water, which has quinine in it. I was expecting her to increase the IR. Does anyone here drink tonic water for breakthrough pain?

We had similar problems with spasms/pain. The tiniest movement in the wrong direction triggered a spasm, or sometimes they came randomly. We ran the gambit of fentanyl, oxy, oxy ir, morphine drip, and lidocaine patches. We were also on flexeril, a muscle relaxant.

It's hard to say if these pain meds were working or not, because even though we were taking them, it was only during movement and random spasms when the pain got intense. If you ask me, I think it was the chemo for the myeloma that worked to thwart the disease and cause of the pain, that worked. It was almost a good two-three weeks of chemo that we started to notice the pain and spasms diminish.

About a month and a half later, we are still on chemo and oxy, no spasms, but some bone pain.

We didn't hear about the tonic water option. I would have been willing to try it if we had that option. Best of luck.

Hello Ann,

My husband had painful spasms all over: belly, hands, fingers, legs, feet when on his Krypolis, dex, and Revlimid. They were usually worse on his dex days, but they also were triggered in his case by exerting himself and sweating a lot outdoors.

He would drink a glassful of tonic water with quinine at breakfast daily and that usually prevented most spasms during the day. But when he would be doing activities outside and sweat a lot, he would need to drink more. He also found drinking Gatorade and Powerade helpful. Lots of fluids, which is important to help keep the creatinine levels lower.

I'm sure the grocery checkout clerks thought I had a drinking problem, since I purchased so many bottles every week! ;)

Best wishes to you both,
Chris M

I recently had a collor bone break due to a lesion and the spasms were the worst part of it. Flexeril worked great for me in stopping the spasms.

I don't know if this is the same sort of pain that you're talking about, but I've experienced acute muscle cramps, mostly in my hands, but sometimes in my legs. These come on if I grip something too tightly or hold my fingers in a certain position for several seconds. And sometimes they just come on randomly. I've read that muscle cramps can be a side effect of Revlimid, which I'm on. I tried tonic water, but that didn't do much to help the cramps. But I also read somewhere here in The Beacon forum that vinegar helps. A small glass of 1/2 cider vinegar and 1/2 water almost instantly stops my muscle cramps. Maybe because I'm so busy thinking about how awful it tastes that I forget about the cramps. But whatever works!
