TMB Book Club - Poll to Choose First Books (Round 2)

by Beacon Staff on Fri Jun 27, 2014 12:03 pm

This poll is to determine what will be the first book(s) read and discussed by the new 'TMB Book Club', which will discuss selected books here in the Beacon forum.

Please vote in the poll only if you intend to participate in the book club.

The choice of the TMB Book Club's first books is being done in a two-step process.

An initial poll was carried out to determine which books are particularly of interest to people who want to participate in the book club. The poll allowed people to vote for up to three books they'd like to read from a list of almost 20 books.

The poll directly above is the second step in the selection process. It includes only the top four vote getters from the first poll.

In this poll, each person is allowed to vote only once (as was the case before), and you can only vote for one book.

The book that gets the most votes in this poll will be the first book discussed by the book club.

Because there is a lot of interest in the book club, we may also choose to have a second book read in parallel during the first month of the book club.

Thus, it is possible (likely?) that one of the runner-ups from this poll also will end up being discussed next month as one of the first books the book club discusses.

So cast your vote!

You have until Monday, June 30th, to participate in the poll. Once the poll closes, the results will be discussed and a final decision will then be made about which book (or books) to discuss in the book club next month (July).

And we have a winner for the first book to be read by the Beacon book club ... "Enjoy Every Sandwich: Living Each Day as If It Were Your Last" by Lee Lipsenthal.

We also have a relatively close second place vote getter, "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer" by Siddhartha Mukherjee.

There was a proposal that a number of people supported that we consider offering people the option of reading either of the top two vote getters as their first book (or both, if they wish).

There then would be two separate areas in the forum open in parallel for posting and discussion -- one for discussing "Enjoy Every Sandwich", and another for "The Emperor of all Maladies".

Note that, if we went forward with this proposal, it would not preclude one or both books read in the coming month from being read and discussed again in the near future by a different group of readers.

If you choose to read one of the books this month, you'll probably have a chance to read the other book sometime in the near future.

So should we go ahead and have the two top vote getters read in parallel over the coming month, with people having the option of choosing from one or the other (or, if they're ambitious, both)?

I would be in favour of having two parallel groups of readers, since with 44 people responding, you could be pretty sure that there would be enough in each group to have a discussion. Thanks for running this poll, and setting up a forum with a book or two chosen in this way. Thanks Steve and the others responding for offering suggestions also.

Maybe we are onto something here ... I know I enjoy reading books and talking about them in my home book club. Even when I was really sick after the SCT, friends brought me a book from that group. I can't even remember if I read them but it was nice to stay with the group.

That was in the early spring of 2010, and by the fall I was back to meetings in my book club . Of course, I had a lot of conversations about myeloma with my book club friends. It's the 'Medical Ladies Book Club' and has been running for more than 30 years I am sure. I have been involved for approx. 20 years anyways.

SO, it will be nice to join a second book club too!

I would like to try book club, also. Wonder if number 2 could be read in August instead of tandem as it is a very long book.

Yes, Boris, I say let's go ahead and kick things off with tandem reading groups.

Maybe at the end of July (or even now, perhaps) we ask folks if they would want to flip the books, so to speak, between reading groups after we've finished the first books, since we've seen such a high polling interest in both of the top two books? Or as you suggest, maybe you continue to let people know that some of the higher interest books will return for discussion sometime say, within the next 6 months?

One question: do we need to determine now who or how many are in which reading/discussion group? Or does in matter? Just thinking out loud here ... I guess folks will reveal which book they're interested in once the respective forum sections are open for discussion, yes?

I'm pumped ... so everybody ready to get going!? :)

Thanks for the feedback, Steve, Nancy, and M Stanley.

We'll see how it works with two books being read the first month. To answer Steve's question, right now we don't think it's necessary to have people commit in advance to which of the two books they want to read. People will be able to read and participate in either of the two discussion areas (one for each of the two books).

This will minimize the need to manage "membership" in one group of the other, and also give people the freedom to read and discuss both books at the same time, if they want.

This is the approach we'll take for now. If problems crop up, we can re-think the rules.

Give us about a day to set up the new area of the forum and post some suggestions for how things should run once the basic structure is established. We'll do our best to get the word out once everything is up and running.

So, just to wrap up this discussion ...

There will be two books that everyone interested in the book club can choose to read during July. People can read one or both. If you only read one, there will be an opportunity in the near future to read and discuss the other.

We've opened up dedicated sub-forums here in the forum for discussions about each of the two books that have been selected. Here are the links to the discussions:

Enjoy Every Sandwich: Living Each Day as If It Were Your Last, by Lee Lipsenthal
The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, by Siddhartha Mukherjee

Proposed guidelines for discussions about the books also have been posted here.

You will always be able to find the book club area of the forum by going to the front page of the forum, and then going down the page to the "General Discussion" area of the forum, where there's a link to the book club forums.

We appreciate all the interest in this new opportunity to build connections and support within the myeloma community.
