Re: TMB Book Club - Poll to Choose First Book (Round 1)

True enough ... the issue of book accessibility for a reading group such as what we're proposing here at TMB is an important one and in that regard I'd like to offer one suggestion.

For the past few years, when I can't find an interesting Nook book for less than 5 bucks, (hey ... I'm Scot/Irish ... wanna make something out of it!?) I've been buying books from an online used book store by the name of: betterworldbooks.com.

Go to the site's press page, which is in the About Us section of the site, for more information about the site. As you'll see, it's a business that gives a significant percentage of sales to various non-profit groups to help support literacy programs around the world.

They are very "green-minded" and very aware of the carbon footprint upon the environment, e.g., if you have some used books that you'd like to keep out of the local landfill then you can donate them to BWB and they will send you the postage to help you make that happen.

They accept PayPal (and other forms of payment) with FREE shipping ... usually shipping in 1-2 business days with delivery generally in 5 business days within the continental U.S.

Over the years I've used many online used book re-sellers and Better World Books is clearly the best one I've had the pleasure of dealing with.

I have no financial interest in their company but I do highly recommend them! :)

Well, the poll is done (see the results above) and it looks like there are two clear favorites, then another group of two, and another group of two after that.

We're thinking of making the final selection -- via a poll where everyone gets just one vote -- be between the top 4 books in the poll up above.

Depending on how that poll goes, we're open to their being two books be read in parallel in the first month of the book club, with people being able to choose which of the two books they want to read.

Does a final vote among the top four vote getters sound okay to everyone?

That sounds good to me! Thanks Beacon Staff for arranging this book club. I am sure that the readers will enjoy not only finding others' suggestions, but also having a chance to discuss them with people of similar interests! I now have quite a stack of library books to look through....

Well, since there are 11 votes for the top vote-getter and 10 for the second, with the others somewhat trailing, I think a second polling with one vote per member would be perfect! ;)

Not only will it identify the top books as voted on by the entire group, it will likely reveal that the interest in each is "manageable" in order to create the two parallel reading groups.

One possible wrinkle MIGHT be that we have some folks, like myself for instance, who might want to participate in both reading groups, depending upon the books being read. Is there any reason that folks can't do two book groups at the same time? Just askin'. :)

Thanks again to TMB for your help with all of this!

Thanks for the feedback, Nancy and Steve. We'll prepare the second poll and set it up with just the top four choices from this poll, and allow only one vote per person.

And, Steve, to your question about reading more than one book at a time, we don't think that will be a problem, and we certainly intend to set things up so that will be possible.
