Thanks Beacon Staff...that is a great list! I did not realize that so many clinical trials are ongoing, or have been done, in my area. I have met other patients who are on clinical trials, and know that it is not unusual to take that route for treatment.

Hi Dan,

I would not subject my mother to a clinical trail when there are many drug and natural interventions available to choose from. I would exhaust these options first before entertaining the thought of a clinical trial, which is unproven on humans and takes the responsibility away from doctors should the 'human volunteers' take a turn for the worse, only my opinion though.

Clinicaltrials.gov state that 'it is not usually known whether it (treatment) will be helpful, harmful, or no different than available alternatives (including no intervention).' Based on this, I would safely say your mom deserves better.

You could say that the drugs available to the market have only become available as a result of successful human experimentation. I call it Human Lab Rats!

Again, I wish you both the best of luck in the treatment path you go down.

Dave,

Your point is well taken. However, bear in mind that Dan and his family are in Canada. Thus, certain treatment options which may be readily available to U.S.-based patients may only be available to Dan's mother through clinical trials.

Take Revlimid as a simple example. It is used regularly as front-line treatment in the U.S. However, outside the U.S., it rarely is used that way outside of clinical trials because of healthcare system restrictions on off-label use.

Even in the U.S., there are plenty of situations where even newly diagnosed patients will want to consider participating in a clinical trials. A number of Beacon readers (and columnists) have participated in clinical trials and are very glad they did.

Best regards,
