Did I get the Theracurmin I wanted?

by cdnirene on Fri Jan 08, 2016 5:21 pm

I live in Canada and haven't been able to find the strength of Theracurmin I want locally. So I ordered from a Canadian store online. What I received reads differently than what the website says. I was confused and phoned and asked if it was the same product. The person didn't know and was quick to offer a refund if I wasn't satisfied. I didn't know what to do as it may be the right product with updated labeling. The only other Canadian source online I looked at was Amazon. I paid $34 for 60 capsules.

Amazon lists the same image as the website where I made the purchase for a price of $103 (second item on this list):

The first item on the Amazon list is what I actually received. Amazon charges $47.

So I am really confused. It looks like I got a bargain, whether it is the wrong product or not. In other words I paid $34 for a product which sells on Amazon.ca for either $47 or $103

Can anyone tell from the information below whether the two products are the same?

From the website where I made purchase:

Image:
CurcuminRich brand
Double Strength Theracurmin
600 mg
60 Vegetarian Capsules

Webpage:
Each Capsule Contains:
Curcumin (Curcuma longa) (rhizome)...60 mg
(From 600 mg of TheracurminTM, surface controlled
particle dispersion of turmeric root)

Bottle I received:

Front of Label:

Back of Label:

Theracurmin curcumin* from turmeric (Curcuma longa) (rhizome) ... 60 mg

* A highly bioavailable form of curcumin - the most active curcuminoid in turmeric

Recommended adult dose: 1 capsule daily or as directed by a health care practictioner

Short answer: it looks like the same product (ASIN: B00GHC2FL2).

CurcuminRich has recently changed the label.

The old label used to say:

"TheracurminTM 600 mg (Providing a surface controlled, colloidal dispersion of 60 mg curcumin from turmeric [Curcuma longa] root extract.)"

The new label now says:

"Theracurmin curcumin* from turmeric (Curcuma longa) (root) 60 mg
* A highly bioavailable form of curcumin - the most active curcuminoid in turmeric"

Their new label and nutrition information could be found at:

http://www.naturalfactors.com/product/curcuminrich-theracurmin-2

Old labels are attached:

Interestingly, it is the same product with the same UPC number.

I had multiple orders from Natural Factors via Amazon and my latest bottle received is with the new label "60mg". I actually did not notice this until this post.

I assume Theracurmin (a reduced particle size, colloidal dispersion of curcumin from turmeric root) contains 10% by weight of curcumin and the rest are emulsifiers for improved absorption.

Bar-none is the biggest curcumin expert on this forum :) although he favors Longvida curcumin, and it would be great for him or someone else knowledgeable in turmeric root extracts to jump in and explain the change in label.

Thanks, Eddie!

Do you take 1 capsule per day as recommended on the label, or do you take more?

Hi and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the Wild Wild West of supplements! I agree with Eddie that it is the same product. Unfortunately, labeling standards have apparently not kept pace with these new hybrid absorption formulations and the consumer is once again somewhat in the dark.

What is common among brands is that the hybrid formula is sold to resellers who repackage and do their own labels. An interesting visual observation I've made lately is that the actual content of the capsule can also be questionable between resellers. With Longvida I've ordered Myodyne and another brand with the same dosage but the Myodyne seems to be darker yellow and gives me a better effect (subjective). This leads me to think that there may be variation in the capsules between brands.

All that being said, I think Theracurmin is very promising from what I have read. The absorption profile is supposed to be linear as dosage is increased which is exciting. The MD Anderson phase I trial is completed and I look forward to the results and next phase. My current regimen is Sabinsa C3 and Longvida but I'm following this closely.

My best to all! BN

Thanks, Bar-none. Given the confusing label information, I think I had better stick to the recommended dosage on the label.

Barnone: Hi - I'm new to this thread. My mom is taking Theracurmin and we were trying to equate the former dosage of curcumin with Theracumin, which has higher absorbency. Seems like many on the Beacon take at least 4 g - are you sticking with 4 g or have you reduced it?

Also, have others continued with supplements while receiving treatment?

My mom was diagnosed in 2009 t(4;14) and has seen a gradual increase over the years. We're just now told she will likely go on a trial of KRd (Kyprolis, Revlimid, dexamethasone; high dosage), which is her first treatment.

Thanks so much.

Hi mymom,

My current regimen is 8 grams of Doctors Best daily divided into 2 doses and 800 mg of Longvida divided in two also.

I tolerate curcumin very well and like the way it makes me feel both cognitively (my thinking is less cloudy) and my joints ache less, so I have not reduced the dose.

My doctor asked that I suspend taking curcumin around my auto transplant in 2014, which I did gladly since my philosophy has always been to complement the traditional treatment with curcumin when feasibility allowed.

My doctor has been supportive so please make sure your Mom's doc is on board. I take Revlimid 10 mg nightly on a 21 day on / 7 day off schedule but have not taken Kyprolis with curcumin.

Please keep us posted.

My best to you and your Mom! BN

Thank you for sharing about your mom and bringing up the subject of theracurmin..

My husband was recently diagnosed with smoldering myeloma. He has the dreaded TP53 mutation (del17p) on his FISH. We will be seeing a specialist in the southern California area in March so we are not taking supplements.
