The interval between courses of chemotherapy

by Kioto on Tue Jul 10, 2012 8:47 am

Hello, and sorry for my English. My father was diagnosed with myeloma, stage three, he took the first course of chemotherapy (Alkeran (orally) + prednisone for 6 days). Doctor said come in a month and get tested. I read that the intervals between chemotherapy should be as short as possible (3-4 weeks) and is strictly enforced. The analyzes usually do 3 to 4 days and re-medication may be relegated to 35-36 days from the first. Tell me please, what should be the interval between courses of chemotherapy? Thank you.

Hi Kioto, With melphalan (Alkeran) and prednisone the interval is at least 6 weeks. The standard dose hit my mom so hard that they had to hold off even longer, as her white blood cell count dropped so low, then they gave her a reduced dose. Usually this combination is for the elderly and normally Thalidomide or Revlimid is added to the mix also - you might want to ask your father's doctor about that. Wishing you and your father all the best.
