A tip I repeat often to my multiple myeloma support group is:
Tape record all your Dr. visits. While the advice about taking a friend and taking notes sounds good, it isn't efficient, reliable or safely reviewable,
1. With a recording, you can always review the exact exchange.
2. Frees you from the burden of carefully registering the Dr's response in the moment.
3. Lets you be more interactive in the conversation.
4. Enables getting responses to all/more of your WRITTEN QUESTION LIST.
5. Dr's awareness of the recording prompts more careful/thoughtful responses.
6. A Dr's objection to recording is revealing about his medical confidence.
7. Your Dr works for YOU and you are paying for the product created which is essentially the information exchanged.
I have had good experience with this practice and have met with no objections.
A running joke with my cardiologist is that I am writing an autobiography of my experience.
