Can someone help me. I may be in the wrong place to post this but I am new here, and scared.
My Dad, age 83, had a Bence-Jones Prot (BJP) random Urine test. He has chronic kidney disease (IV). The test detected alpha-1, alpha-2, Beta, and gamma globulin urine. Does this mean he has multiple myeloma? He has had bladder cancer which resulted in a radical systectomy January 2012) and there has been none detected since, unless now. The note in the BJP report said there was a "Suspicious band in the beta region with kappa specificity"
Please help me. What does this mean?
The dotor has not yet looked at the results. I have a call into him but he has not yet returned the call.
Can someone help me with this.

Re: Suspicious band in beta region with kappa specificity
Good question.
The random urine test has its flaws. What is described seems to be non-specific proteinuria which would be common in chronic kidney disease.
The kappa band though would make me want to do further testing with a serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation as well as a serum free light chain assay. I would also do a 24 hour urine collection for protein electrophoresis and immunofixation.

Thank you for your help.
I also meant to say that the doctor lowered his blood pressure medicine in half and added a water pill and the creatinine levels and BUN levels decreased to where they were a month ago. The GFR has also increased to where it was a month ago. The GFR was originally 36 but went down to 29 and is now back up to 34.
My Dad is an ostomate.
I am just worried that since he took a BJP test that he suspected multiple myeloma.
