Sudden uncontrollable shaking

by angiebaldy on Mon Sep 07, 2015 8:52 pm

I have not posted for a while, but I had an episode of something so strange last night it has actually scared me.

I was diagnosed with IgA lambda MGUS in 2012. Have been really stable since then. I also have lupus, PSVT and Type II DM. Last night I went to bed and was feeling fine around 10 p.m. About 10 minutes later, I had an overwhelming feeling of being sleepy and then I began to shake violently and felt cold to my bones. Checked my blood sugar and it was fine. I really had no other symptoms but about 15 minutes later, I had a fever of 103.8. Still no other symptoms.

I took 800 mg ibuprofen figuring I was getting sick. About 30 minutes later I vomited. Two hours after I took the ibuprofen I still had a temp of almost 103, so I took Tylenol. The violent shaking had stopped and I no longer felt cold, but felt as if my skin were on fire.

All of this sounds as if I was just getting sick right? Well here is the strange part. I woke up this a.m. absolutely fine. No fever. Not sick. Nothing. Don't get me wrong, I am happy I am fine, but the whole thing has just perplexed me. I have had chills before with a fever, but this was like chills on steroids. Almost to the point I thought it might be a seizure, but I know I would not be aware of it if it was a seizure.

I recently have had some problems with my neck and I am actually scheduled for an MRI of the C-spine in the a.m. to make sure the problem is a bulging disc and not a lytic lesion or plasmacytoma. My question is this. Could a lytic lesion or plasmacytoma in the cervical region cause this?

I am a nurse practitioner (peds) and my brain is telling me it was probably an illness, but my heart is scared because it just doesn't make complete sense. I am most likely over thinking this but needed some reassurance from someone else.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Angie - I just read your post and the exact same thing happened to my mom about 2 months ago. My mom is 84 and last summer was treated for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. We were told her immune system would be compromised for about a year. So, about two months ago mom woke up shaking and was very cold. The shaking continued for 1-2 hours with a fever (I think she took Aleve). We wanted to take her to ER, but she insisted she was fine and in the morning everything seemed normal. But, about 4-5 days later she was fatigued and didn't want to eat. My sister took her to the doctor and she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI). We were thinking the worst and that she was out of remission. Glad you are ok now - Diane

Hi Angie,

I agree with Diane. The chills and fever spike sound like signs of an infection. The other possibility that occurred to me was some sort of food poisoning, since that also can cause fever and chills, and also because the incident was short-lived. However, food poisoning also usually has GI-related symptoms, like abdominal pain, gas, and diarrhea. Since you didn't mention having any of those, I suspect some sort of infection is more likely the cause.

Let us know if you find out anything more about what happened.

Good luck!

After returning from Costa Rica year ago, I had severe chills and 104 temp. Did not feel sick either. It happened every few days for almost 3 weeks. No doctor I talked with had any idea what it was due to. They suggested I ask other myeloma patients. I never posted as I did not feel sick either and myeloma markers were stable.

I later had the same event when I took Macrobid for UTI. I also had asthma-like symptoms and hacking cough. X-ray was negative. Internist did not feel it was due to the antibiotic but I disagree. It started 3 hours after taking and did not come back when drug was switched to Bactrim.

I tried Macrobid again when there was no other oral alternative and same thing happened. The infectious specialist said that most likely it was an allergic reaction to Macrobid.

By any chance could this be an explanation for your fever and chills?

Sepsis. Learn the symptoms - you have many of the signs! It's the third leading cause of death. Lost my 40-year-old husband in 2012.
