Hope things are looking up for you, Joe, and that you get some relief from that back pain. I am currently on Day +9 and feeling quite low in energy. As is supposed to happen, my WBCs, and neutrophils, have bottomed out. My platelets dropped today to 22. I suppose I may need a transfusion tomorrow if they keep descending. But you have been through all this stuff. For me its not too debilitating, but I could certainly do without the diarrhea. I hope things rebound quickly.

Today a normally simple thing like a dead car battery became a big issue, but Joann and I stumbled through and got the car jumped and into the shop for a new battery. What a relief.

Anyway, Joe, I am on daily visits to VGH BMT Daycare in the mornings for 2 + hrs or so for the whole week at least, and generally between 9 and 12, if you happen to be in the neighborhood, pop in and say hello.

Hi All,

I am sorry I have been unable to update my stem cell story after my last post on June 19, 2017. On that evening I had to phone 911 for emergency help. I was promptly diagnosed with two broken vertebrae. This caused me to have a four week stay in hospital.

After two days post discharge from my 4 week stay at hospital, I developed more back pain and had to go back to ER. It was found that I had acquired two more broken vertebrae, giving me a total of 5 broken vertebrae over a 4 to 5 week period. Both broken vertebrae were treated with vertebroplasty, which is a surgical procedure to cement the bones back together. My broken vertebrae are believed to be due to osteoporosis, not multiple myeloma.

Two days ago I was released from the hospital; I have been put on palliative home care. I will try to post as often as I can, but it is going to be a while before I have sufficient strength to resume frequent positing.

I am deeply humbled by all your expressions of goodwill. Thank you!

I will fight on.

Joe

(I have resumed my CyBorD treatment regimen. I also should mention I had wished to visit Colin at VGH, but as I spent most of my time in palliative care at St. Paul’s Hospital – another Vancouver hospital – this was not possible.)

Hi Wobbles,

Thanks for posting and updating us about how you are doing. I also wondered about that. Am really sorry to hear of your fractures, and hope you are getting some relief from that They can take a long time to heal. I hope that the home care works well, but also that you could continue to be treated for myeloma.

Best wishes, Nancy

Well hello Joe. It is wonderful to hear from you. I am very sorry to hear of your osteoporosis and vertebrae damage. That certainly explains all the back pain you were experiencing. Hope you have found some relief from the pain with the operation(s) and still have some mobility. I imagine it is too early to know how the CyborD drug regimen is performing on your multiple myeloma. Fighting all these things is quite a challenge and you are a brave warrior.

I am also sorry we haven't had a chance to meet up yet. I am back on the island but will be returning to VGH in late September for another appointment. I am doing pretty well, I think. I have not yet achieved a complete response and I hope I am still heading in that direction. I am about 58 days post transplant. Blood work is only monthly now, so I have to wait and see if the M-spike is continuing to decrease. Pretty sure it is. They are recommending Revlimid for maintenance starting next month.

Look forward to hearing from you again when you gain some strength back. Keep up the good fight my friend.
