I live in Rocky Point, New York – quite a distance from Sloan. It is about a 25 minute drive to the Ronkonkoma train station and then an hour and 15 minute commute to the city. Anyone have any suggestions for housing when my brother in law has his stem cell transplant?
They live in rural upstate New York and will be coming to stay with me for this. Although Roswell is in upstate New York, it is a 6 hour drive for my sister, who is in her late 60's, and my brother in law with the myeloma is 70.
Trying to figure out the best place for him.

Hi pookey,
Most transplant centers will assign a coordinator who will work with the patient and family to address this issue and a host of others, usually outlined in a guidebook or such.
My center put together a very comprehensive booklet and we had several pre-transplant meetings to make sure each issue – i.e., caregiving, nutrition, housing etc. – was addressed prior.
I would feel confident that Sloan will provide at least as much.

There is a Hope Lodge in NYC. I'm sure Sloan will tell you about this option. My Dad and I stayed in one in Buffalo, NY during my mom's stem cell transplant last year. It is an amazing place.

I had an in-patient stem cell transplant at Memorial Sloan Kettering in 2013, so I hope I can give you some information that will be a help.
Bar-None and Allison are both correct. Your brother-in-law will be given a big binder with tons of important information about the SCT about a month before undergoing the procedure. There is a section on housing in the binder, with information about hotels near Memorial Hospital.
An MSK social worker will meet with your brother-in-law and his wife prior to the transplant and explain various housing options, among other important things to consider.
And, as Allison expected, there is a Hope Lodge in NYC, just a block from Penn Station. That's about 2 1/2 miles from Memorial Hospital, but MSK runs a shuttle between the two. And, as Allison said, Hope Lodge is a truly amazing place. It is run by the American Cancer Society and it is totally free.
We live about 2 hours away from MSK in NJ. My wife and children were not given the option to stay at Hope Lodge while I was in the hospital following the SCT. I think the assumption was that they could commute in to see me without too much trouble, which they did. However, I was required to stay at Hope Lodge following discharge from the hospital after my SCT. My MSK doctors wanted me to be closer to MSK than my home in case there was a problem. An MSK social worker made all the arrangements for me to stay there. I and a caretaker (sometimes my wife and sometimes one of my adult children) stayed at Hope Lodge for a week after my discharge, then I was cleared to go home.
