Inpatient Stem Cell Transplant at Providence Portland

by AnneV on Thu Jul 16, 2015 11:53 am

Hey everyone,

I haven't posted much here, but do read what you all share and really appreciate all I have learned. I haven't met anybody locally (Portland, Oregon) with multiple myeloma, but feel like I know many of you through your posts. Without the Beacon, I wouldn't have learned as much as I have about my disease and how to be my own advocate in making decisions.

I'm going in tomorrow for an inpatient stem cell transplant at Providence Portland Hospital. I am IgA kappa, and am high risk due to del(17p). Achieved a complete response (CR) after induction therapy of RVD [Revlimid, Velcade, dexamethasone]. My doctor is planning on following the stem cell transplant with maintenance of low-dose Revlimid and dex. I am on board with these decisions.

Tonight I am having a "head shaving party". Figured since I was going to lose it anyway, I would celebrate the event with friends and family.

I will try to update you on how I am handling the transplant. I get 2 doses of melphalan tomorrow and Saturday. Monday I get my stem cells back.

I'm feeling pretty good considering. Hope you are all doing well. Life is good – find joy in each day.

You seem to have a great attitude, Anne, and that will help. Best wishes for minimal side effects, a speedy recovery, and a great response!

Hi AnneV,

I am also in Portland, Oregon. I wish you the best of luck tomorrow! I don't have symptomatic multiple myeloma, but borderline smoldering multiple myeloma, so have not experienced what you are going through.

I currently am with Kaiser, but am thinking about a second opinion at Knight.

I will be thinking about you and wish you the best and a speedy recovery!

Dear AnneV,

Good luck with your transplant. I also have del(17p) high-risk multiple myeloma. I had my stem cell transplant in February 2015, and I'm doing quite well. I did not have any complications during my transplant and did the entire process as an outpatient at Mayo in Rochester, Minneosta. I also had RVD as my induction therapy.

I'm now on Velcade injections every other week (no dex) and also get Zometa once a month.

Please keep us posted on how you do. We will all be cheering for you.

Anne,

I also live in Portland, and am at Mayo in Rochester now. I am a few days ahead of you, as will get my stem cells back tomorrow. So far, manageable side effects. Had melphalan in one day, 400 mg yesterday.

Best wishes for a safe and speedy recovery.

Anne,

Blessings to you on your ASCT! I am also in Portland with multiple myeloma and go to OHSU. During my tandem ASCT in NJ, I found it really helpful to have some great books, music, and movies available.

Enjoy the ice chips!

Anne

Thank you for sharing. Good luck with your stem cell transplant and I wish you a very speedy recovery. We will be looking forward to future posts to see how you are doing. My husband is scheduled for his stem cell transplant in August so we are very curious about what to expect.

May God bless you during this procedure.

Patty

Hi all! Made it through my first day (-3). Got my PICC line placed and received my first dose of melphalan. Chewed 6 cups of ice and a popsicle. Hope that keeps mouth sores to a minimum. I get the second dose today, so more ice chewing in my future!

Here at Providence Portland, they have 4 oversized transplant rooms that have couches that make into a bed in case you want someone to stay overnight. I have a great view of trees and in the distance Mount St. Helens. Staff here is caring, friendly, and competent. Can't ask for much more!
