Stem cell transplant with Parkinson's disease

by jerry k on Mon Aug 14, 2017 6:03 am

Hi:

I have multiple myeloma, and it was discovered this past February. I have been on treatment since then and they have worked very well. My numbers are about normal.

Sometime in late September / October I will be having a stem cell transplant. I also have Parkinson's disease. I've had that for about 5 years now, and it is under control.

My question is will the transplant affect my Parkinson's in any way, good or bad, both in the short term and longer term.

Also, will having Parkinson's affect how I react to the transplant.

I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks a lot.

Hi Jerry K,

Welcome to the forum, and i hope that you can get some help here and answers to your questions.

I googled up Parkinsons disease and stem cell transplants and found that there is research into the use of stem cells to produce dopamine producing neural cells. One such reference is:

Fu, MH, et al, "Stem cell transplantation therapy in Parkinson’s disease," SpringerPlus, Oct 2015 (full text of article)

Of course this is not the same as have a stem cell transplant to produce new blood cells, but they do mention the different types of stem cells, including hematopoietic stem cells, in the article.

I hope that in the future Parkinsons may also be cured, as well as Multiple Myeloma.

Hi Nancy:

Thanks for checking it out. I will look up that info. I appreciate your help. I have been doing very well with the Parkinson's, and intend to fight multiple myeloma just as hard. The medications I have been on have worked really well, and when I found out the stem cell transplant will send it into remission I said yes, I want that!

Once again, thanks.
