Based on the schedule we received today, my husband will have his first melphalan treatment (Day 3) on Christmas Eve and the next one Christmas Day, then day of rest, then stem cell transplant on 12/27.
I was not happy with the schedule as I am worried he will be very sick on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. They stated that he will have a reduced dose for those chemo treatments and he will not have much nausea or begin to feel bad until 7-10 days later. They say that he should be fine on Day 3 and Day 2.
I just have heard so many different stories that I am not sure. He (my husband) refuses to wait ... wants to get it done before 2014.

I pretty much was on schedule similar to your husband's but just had a last minute change today due to insurance not approving SCT until Feb. Part of me wants to get it done, the other part wants the extra time to get past holidays and have more preparation. Not fun.

my experience is also that I became ill after about 7 days and couldn´t eat or drink for several days.

My original schedule was very similar and I asked to have my SCT later in January...they agreed! I didn't want to be sick over Christmas.

Same here, but I'm reluctant to say I was ill. For me is more like washed out. I had trouble sleeping and had to have help with that and the meds overall simply left me blase. I also developed C-Diff and that caused me problems. I didn't have much appetite and relied heavily on Boost, which is what I prefer, but Ensure would have worked just as well.
My answer after all of that is in my case I just didn't feel up to anything, but I wasn't suffering.

It'll hit him about three days after the last dose of the chemo. When it hits you it hits hard and you start spiraling down hill for another two weeks. Day 15 after transplant was my turning point. Xmas will probably be fine but New Years will be like a truck hit him. He's probably feeling kind of crappy anyway after the harvesting and the port surgery etc. It'll be tough but once you get past the first couple weeks things improve dramatically each day.
