Other organ failure in myeloma patients with ESRD?

by poontzy on Fri Apr 04, 2014 2:03 pm

Hi,

I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

Does anyone have knowledge of any studies /statistics in regard to other organ failure when a person has multiple myeloma with cast nephropathy (myeloma kidney) and is subsequently dialysis dependent ~thanks

Sorry, but I'm feeling a bit dense this afternoon, so I'm going to have to ask you to clarify a bit.

As I understand it, you've got kidney damage due to multiple myeloma, and it's reached the point of ESRD.

Right?

And what you're wondering is whether or not having ESRD as a result of myeloma will make it more likely that other organs in your body will fail.

Right?

Are there any particular organs you're concerned about?

Hi,

What I was looking for is statistics in regard to other organ failure when a person has cast nephropathy or, as it is called, myeloma kidney.

Myeloma kidney is secondary to multiple myeloma in that the light chains build up and cause casts in the tubes of the kidneys. The proteins that have built up in the kidney, resulting in the myeloma kidney, can also build up in other organs causing other end organ failure.

Basically what are the statistics that other organs will be affected end stage, as with the kidney? So when a person with multiple myeloma has a sticky or clogging shape, what are the instance of other organ failure?

Hello from sunny (finally) Seattle,
There is no risk of the light chains plugging up other organs in the way that they damage the kidneys. However, in some patients the light chains deposit in various organs of the body. This can cause another condition called light chain amyloidosis that can damage the heart, intestines, liver and nervous system.

Dr. Libby, thank you for taking the time to respond.

I'm also interested to know what the statistics say in regard to the progression of light chain amyloidosis. Is it common to progress, and what are some of the indicators that there could be progression?
