I was diagnosed with Stage 3 multiple myeloma a few weeks ago. Mine was found accidentally. I had been having back pain but really didn't think anything of it, as most people experience that.
On January 16, I was in a car accident, not injured. But later that day I wasn't feeling well, so I went to urgent care, she decided to send me to get a CT scan to check for internal bleeding, and in the scan they saw lesions on my spine and that is where this journey started. I have had a PET, not fun, and a bunch of other things.
I started treatment this week with Velcade, Revlimid, and dexamethasone. I have a light chain, but has not started to affect my kidneys yet.
It is hard to wrap my mind around this diagnosis. I never even heard of it until now, and sometimes doing my own research feels like it's not a widely known disease with information. Hoping to respond to this treatment so we can do a stem cell transplant later this year.
Thanks for reading..

Re: Stage 3 multiple myeloma found after car accident
Welcome to the forum, April! I hope that this is a helpful site to learn from.
It is indeed a shock to find out that one has cancer, especially one you didn't know about previously. I hope that the treatments work well for you and put you into a remission even before you have a stem cell transplant.
I went thru something similar, when I had vertebral fractures almost nine years ago. Once I got the diagnosis, the treatments helped to halt this dread disease. If I had not been doing very vigorous exercise, such as lifting heavy garden pots, playing my bagpipes in a parade, and hiking up a mountain, I might not have been injured. Although it's not great to have lytic lesions, at least they were a way of finding the cancer out.
Nobody wants to be in a car accident, but in this case you got an earlier diagnosis than you otherwise might have had! Best wishes for your ongoing treatment and please keep us posted too.
I did not know about the Myeloma Beacon when I was first diagnosed, and only found out about it about two years later. I have learned a lot and enjoyed being part of this community.

Re: Stage 3 multiple myeloma found after car accident
Hi April,
I had a very similar treatment plan over the summer and fall. It put me in what is considered complete remission, and I just got home last week from having the stem cell transplant.
This is a great forum with a wealth of information and personal experiences. I wish you the best in your journey.
