My husband, age 59. July 2014, lung CT indicated lesion on rib, diagnosed with smoldering myeloma.
Six months later, January 2015, a bonk on his head at work brought on vomiting for a week, which lead to ER visit. Kidney failure and multiple myeloma diagnosed. Creatinine at 7, 10,000 light chain. Dialysis started immediately and lasted 3 months. Velcade subq and dex now. Creatinine at 2 (yahoo) and light chains 35. Velcade shot now once a week!
He is doing well overall, tired and depressed often. He lost 25 lbs (11 kg).
I continue reading and learning everything I can. He does not want to know too much, so I do not bombard him with everything. Thankful for medical advancement and hope for long life together.
Glad to have the Beacon as a wonderful resource.

Re: Smoldering to full myeloma & kidney failure in 6 months
He is doing ok overall considering how bad he was upon initial kidney failure etc. Lesion on rib has been causing pain, and fatigue is worse some days more than others. Depression and uncertainty remain with a more emotional response.
Thanks for asking. How are your doing? You were diagnosed at a younger age than most.

Re: Smoldering to full myeloma & kidney failure in 6 months
I have been feeling great and, while that means something, my lab numbers show I am relapsing, but I do not believe it is that bad of a relapse. I will find out more tomorrow.
I have been off maintenance therapy since March and should be starting Kyprolis and dexamethasone sometime soon. I am not looking forward to it. I have been enjoying the break in drugs the last three months, I can tell the difference and I am not looking forward to going back on them again. But I have to do what I have to do.
Sounds like your husband is responding well, but sorry to hear about the depression. I hope he can come out of that. I am sure this is hard on you as well.
Best wishes,
Eric
