Smoldering myeloma paraprotein levels dropping

by shep on Sun Nov 23, 2014 1:22 am

Hi all,

I'm new to this disease. My initial paraprotein (M-spike) level was 36 g/l (3.6 g/dL) in June and has fallen to 32, 31, and now 29. My doc originally thought I had multiple myeloma but, after all the tests, which were all normal except a bone marrow biopsy at 10% with no abnormal chromosomes, he revised his diagnosis to smoldering.

I thought that paraprotein could not be removed by the immune system?

I know this is a vexing question as to why levels fluctuate, but has anyone had similar experience?

Best wishes all, shep

Hello from Seattle, Shep,

M-spike levels can fluctuate somewhat. This is not surprising. They may change according to immune conditions within the body. This is neither a good sign nor a bad sign. The levels should continue to be followed.
