I was diagnosed with smoldering myeloma 19 December 2008. By Gods grace, I'm still smoldering. I began my first year traveling to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota every three months for monitoring. I'm a Sergeant Major in the United States Army and move around frequently so I transferred my care to MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. Since 2008, I had/have traveled to Mayo Clinic or M. D. Anderson every three months
Since my diagnosis, I have deployed to Iraq in 2010 and returned. It took some convincing my oncologist, but he finally said yes.
In 2011, I was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer. I had a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy and reconstruction. My concern was that this would cause my smoldering myeloma to progress. Well, it didn't . I'm as healthy as ever. Actually, my FLC numbers are continuing drop to normal range.
I share my story with you to say everyone is different, so please stay positive and only focus your health. Stay positive, that's half the battle.
I now have two oncologists and they work together on my health issues. I have another deployment later this year and they both support me.
