Signs of possible multiple myeloma

by Dianem on Mon Sep 24, 2012 12:37 pm

Hi - I was diagnosed with MGUS last Nov and have been stable. I've read that MGUS and multiple myeloma can be genetic. My 81 year old uncle has been treated for 'unknown causes' of anemia for probably 5 years. He has had several GI tests with negative results for cause of anemia. Since unknown what causes the anemia, he gets a blood transfusion every 2-3 months. His older doctor died and a new doctor informed him/family that he has MGUS, hemoglobin of 7.7, and a creatinine level of 27. The new doctor wants to refer him for a BMA to check for multiple myeloma. He sure appears to have some of the CRAB criteria (anemia, m spike, and kidney issues). Can multiple myeloma go undetected for years? If so, can that affect treatment? Yes, I realize there are other issues that can cause his symptoms. Thanks.
