Side effects of medical marijuana?

by johnny321 on Fri Dec 05, 2014 7:17 am

Hi,

My mother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma a few years ago. Recently she started taking Revlimid and one of the side effects has been an inability to get a good night's sleep. Taking sleeping pills has resulted in low quality sleep so she tried medical marijuana oil.

The instructions and side effects struck me as a bit odd. First, she was told to take it twice a day every day. Second, shortly after administration of one drop she started to suffer from stomach problems (a heavy feeling in the stomach and an inability to digest food), which lasted for three days.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Those would seem like odd side effects based on my personal experience using medical marijuana as a sleep aid back when I was on dex. I didn't use oil, though, and I didn't take it twice a day.

I would usually have a small amount of an edible concoction (usually a couple of pot-infused crackers as it was very easy to keep the dose low and consistent, which is not always the case with cookies and such). I would then smoke a small amount of the plant material. The smoked pot would get me to sleep and the edible stuff helped keep me asleep. I had no side effects that I could perceive.

I know quite a few people who've smoked quite a lot of pot over the years, and none have mentioned problems with digestion. (It's usually the opposite, with them digesting way too many pizzas, cookies, bowls of ice cream, etc. after they smoke the stuff.) I haven't heard anything about the oil preparations, though, so maybe there's something different with that.

Perhaps your mom could try the plant itself or maybe look into other pharmaceutical sleep aids if marijuana is going to cause problems for her?
