Questions and discussion about smoldering myeloma (i.e., diagnosis, risk of progression, potential treatment, etc.)

Re: Should I proceed with a stem cell transplant?

First I would like to thank Multibilly for recommending a second opinion before proceeding with a stem cell transplant.

I was able to see a myeloma specialist at MD Anderson and I feel that the trip was a success. The specialist felt that no treatment was needed at this time, and I feel very confident in the findings and recommendations.

I also would like to add that if you find yourself needing a bone marrow biopsy, a trip to a treatment center such as MD Anderson, which does bone marrow biopsies regularly, is worth considering. I felt only a small amount of discomfort. A big difference from my previous experience having one done.

So all and all I was glad that I made the trip and when the time comes for treatment I will probably be making another trip to Houston.

I would suggest that, as you choose a doctor and a location, you think about the future. Where will my caregivers stay? How will they be treated? Will I see the same team each time? I for one used these criteria to pick my place of treatment and have a world of confidence that the most advanced treatment will be used. At sometime you will have to choose. Go with your feelings and educate yourself before making any decisions. I believe you have to be at peace with you doctors and hospital. Even with multiple opinions, you will still be the person to decide.

As a myeloma patient with 17p deletion and diagnosed a little over 2 years ago, this is the best thing I've heard! Someone with 17p deletion going on 10 years survival!

Thanks, lems, for your input. You are right, the ability for my family to be able to be with me is very important to me. I will need their support and help. My wife is willing to go anywhere with me if it will make a difference in my outcome.

I have to be honest about the different factors that also come into play, such as finances, the availability of the rest of my family to be with me and to help my wife with the added responsibilities. I do realize that the final decision comes down to me.

As it is now, I am still smoldering, and I guess I am playing for time and hoping that some new drug will be discovered that will decide for me. I still have to be realistic about it and so for now I wait.
