SEP interpretaion unclear, M-spike

by jessalee01 on Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:02 pm

A while ago I had a SEP test done that was ordered by my ortho due to ongoing, multiple issues. The results are a little unclear to him, myself and my primary.

The test was done and then reinterpreted by another person in the lab with "corrected results". My question is according to these results, do I have a M-Spike? Why would the M-spike itself (if there is one) not be quantified? And is retesting or more specific testing needed and should I insist that it be done. As of yet it has been ignored except for a referral to a rheumotologist that found no auto-immune issues so I am still.

Here are the results given to me:

PROTEIN TOTAL, ELEC 6.4 6.0 - 8.2 g/dL

ALBUMIN,ELEC 3.7 3.3 - 5.0

ALPHA 1 0.2 0.1 - 0.5 g/dL

ALPHA 2 0.7 0.4 - 1.1 g/dL

BETA 0.9 0.4 - 1.1 g/dL

GAMMA 0.8 0.5 - 1.6 g/dL

INTERP,PROT ELECT Note:
Interpreted by: KMM
M-SPIKE See Below
GLOBULIN, TOTAL 2.7 g/dL
A/G RATIO 1.4

Note: I had a MRI done on my thoracic area and was told I have a nonspecific high T2 signal lesion in the T4 vertebral body. I had a bone scan done for unrelated issue and though nothing is noted on the report, I can visually see the highlighting at T4 and T8.

I am female, 35 years old.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Due to my health issues I feel like I am being a pain to my docs. Thank you.

Hi Jessalee01
I don't think your docs think this way! You contribute to their income. I hope that makes you feel better.

Thank you Kate, I only feel like a pain because I don't respond normally to medications and need constant monitoring. There is always weird things happening that they can't figure out. Example, I had pituitary surgery through my nose due to a tumor, it caused a sinus infection that lasted over a 100 days and scar tissue. Had sinus surgery to fix it and remove my adenoids which had been enlarged for a long time. CT scan 2 mo later showed my adenoids were back and enlarged again. Anything to do with my immune system is on hyper drive but I'm sick all the time. I've had 4 outbreaks of shingles in the last 14 mo. This is not normal for my age. I would call myself a hypochondriac if it wasn't for the fact that they keep finding things. ;)

I've probably paid for a few vacations at least. Lol

Sorry, I'm posting from my phone and this is changing the format of what I put in. I am reposting my results in the hope that the reason I'm not getting responses is because of how the results copied in. Where it says m-spike see below, is exactly how it was reported to the doctor and myself.I am still wondering if this is how it is first reported or if this statement is normally found in normal results. Please help.
