Hi everyone,
It's been three years since I had my first autologous stem cell transplant. Unfortunately I am out of remission, and I am currently on my fourth weekly treatment of cyclophosphamide, Velcade, and dexamethasone (40 mg). Planned treatment is 24 weekly visits, then a second stem cell transplant.
Are second stem cell transplants similar to first transplants, or are there changes in the procedure, such as in regard to post-transplant Neupogen injections, hair loss, etc.

Yes, my second transplant was medically a duplicate of my first transplant. However, my second autologous stem cell transplant was exactly 9 weeks after my first. Both of these were in the middle of an aggressive treatment protocol referred to as Total Therapy.
Because my second transplant was so close to my first, I hadn't fully and completely recovered from my first. Therefore it took a little longer to recover from the first transplant because I was in slightly worse condition entering it.
In your case, you might be in better conditioning now then for your first. However, there have probably been improvements to the process in your interim. My interim was 9 weeks, and there were no noticeable changes.
Stem cell transplants are no picnic. But because I tolerated mine fairly well, I am of the camp they have an unnecessary bad reputation. Others have more difficulty with transplants and would and should disagree.

It has been three years since my transplant. We are of the same age and diagnosis. I have responded well and have been on 10 mg Revlimid since Aug 2014. All going well. Blood tests normal with limited problems from side effects. Quality of life is good. Not as energetic as before, but good all the same.
What sort of maintenance program were you on?
Also, when I had my transplant, they harvested enough stem cells for two and kept the excess in storage in case I need a second within ten years. Did they do the same for you?
