Second stem cell transplant (at relapse)

My husband, age 70, is in recovery from his second stem cell transplant. The first one was in May 2013. It went well, but the multiple myeloma started to creep back in late autumn 2015. After a failed attempt at harvesting some two months ago, the second attempt was successful. He is now two weeks post transplant and is seriously ill with various complications and, as we are told, age is against him - his stem cells are 'old' and there is a risk of failure to engraft.

Can anyone provide any insights into what to expect with this sort of transplant – that is, a second transplant, at relapse? Has anyone been in the same situation?

I am sick at heart despite all that can be done is being done.

Dear Fer,

Engraftment failure after an autologous stem cell transplant is extremely rare. In fact, it is so rare that I was not able to find any published papers on the subject, or even a single case report.
