Second Opinion

by Leo on Sun Apr 21, 2013 7:02 pm

I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in April, 2009. I was told that I was in stage 4 and that, I had at most 5 years to live. The Doctor instructed a nurse to give me an injection to bring my blood level up. The doctor then recanted and said that I was in stage 1 and that they would just watch my blood results. In August 2011 the doctor asked me why I was not on Chemo. I told him that He had not prescribed it and that I did not know that I was ready for Chemo. He dropped the subjedt.
In October, 2011, My doctor told me that he was going to start me on Chemo in December. I told him that I thought I would get a second opinion. The doctor then asked me if I wanted him to refer me to Shands University Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. I told him "No", that I would find my own doctor because I new all about teamwork and I wanted to keep the next doctor honest. I went to Moffitt Cancer Hospital in Tampa, Florida a saw a Dr. Baz. After going through testing, I was told that I was not only had smoldering Myeloma and no where near needing Chemo.
Dr. Baz informed me that he had a research study going and asked if I would be interested. Dr. Baz told me that if I took the study drug "BHQ880 (a 2 hour infusion" that I may never have Multi Myeloma. I agreed to the study and was told that I only have a slight trace of myeloma. This is 5 months after taking the study drug.
Don't be afraid to get a second Opinion and do not let the previous doctor set it up.
