Rx to counteract Dex?

by Dotty on Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:09 pm

My husband has multiple myeloma and was diag. Dec of 2009. Tumors in the spine were radiated and was releived of much of the pain. On DRZ for 1 -1/2 years. Taken off & was med free except for Zometa monthly IV. Also had to have a 3 way bypass last August. Did real well. Labs abnormal for the last two months and in Dec 2012, soared and had to go back on the Revlimid and Dex this month. CAN ANYONE tell me if any of their doc's give them an Rx to counteract the awful high from the Dex, like valium, atavan, Zanax or Ambien for a day or two till it wears off? I read the Beacon everyday and many other sites, but have not seen this situation addressed, how strange?? Thanks, Dotty

Hi Dotty, it's been addressed here I would imagine. Xanax (alprazolam) did the trick for me without any "high". Good luck.

I got antivan IV push and Benedryl IV push with my first treatment of IV Dex. Now I get Benedryl only and take ativan when i cant sleep the two nights following my treatments. i dont get the highs but i definitely have more energy and expend it at the gym doing harder workouts.

Hi,

Dex can be the hardest part of treatment for some people. My husband has been dealing with medication issues for 6 years now and has found that some cycles dex can hit harder than others. The important thing is to have options available. Currently he takes dex 20mg once a week (with Revlimid). He takes the dex before bed with a light snack. The next 2 days he takes previcid (for stomach) in the a.m. and 1mg of ativan twice a day. He also takes 25-50 mg of benadryl at night for 2 nights. This seems to be working for him now. In the past he has taken ambien for sleep and zyprexa for mood swings but discontinued both because he didn't like the side effects, though they were both effective. Is it sleep or anger/ irritability with the dex or both? Sometimes a medication like cymbalta can help especially if there is also neuropathy . The important thing is to see what works because dex does make the other meds work better even though it can be a very difficult medication.
