Re: First RVD treatment today, when do side effects kick in?

by Richard L on Wed Jan 14, 2015 6:46 am

Hi Heather,

Looks like we are one week apart in starting the RVD therapy. I started yesterday the 13th. I, too, did not have any effects when I went to bed after getting all three drugs today. I am also on the two week on, one week off schedule for three cycles. Though I did wake up at 1:30 A.M. this morning and have not been able to get back to sleep. I did though go to sleep at 9:00 P.M. last night, so almost 5 hours is not bad I am hoping to get a nap in today.

The oncologist and his nurse both said that, if insomnia becomes a problem, they will adjust the dex dose, since I am on the 80 mg per week dose to start.

Good luck going forward.

Richard

I am only on my second cycle of Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone (RVD). Each cycle was different. My second cycle I was on Revlimid 15 mg for 14 days, Velcade injection once a week, with 40 mg of dex on morning of injection. I was only to have three weeks this cycle.

I began having severe side effects from the treatment regimen, so my cycle was stopped for two weeks. I began having a rash that began as blood spots on my legs and within hours changed to welts that moved up to my upper torso. The rash has gone into my mouth and has swollen up my tongue and inside of mouth. It has not produced blisters, just swollen tissue and rash. My hair has begun to slowly fall out. I have the shakes constantly and my attention span is almost null. Fatigue is a big problem. When I wake up full of energy and do just small things, I seem to zap out in no time at all. Spasms in my feet and legs are getting more noticeable. I ache most of the time.

I went to my doctor Thursday, my normal Velcade day and he stopped all treatment and started me on a steroid pack. I go back to him April 9th. At this time he will have my blood work back and we will know what is going on with the cancer. He told me the treatment is making me sick. Even though I am on a lower dose of Revlimid, I don't think my body can do the 14 days. I am curious as to what he may do next.

All of my weekly blood work had came back normal now for about 4 weeks. The doctor is very surprised at that. Yesterday was the second day on the steroids and my nausea is returning and I can't eat

I am surprised at how things change so fast with this disease. I try to wrap my head around it, I like doing research and learning about what is going on, but with this, I can't seem to do it. I come here to read and learn from all of you and it helps.

Hello Nora and welcome to the Forum. It is good that you found the Beacon for asking questions and sharing information too.

I am just wondering if you are still taking an anti-nausea drug such as Kytril (granisetron). When I had induction therapy with Velcade, that was used for nausea. I also ate anything with ginger, ginger ale, and a mild diet too.

Would your doctor be trying just one drug of the two of Revlimid or Velcade to treat the myeloma? Many people report having a rash from Revlimid.

It's great the your blood work has returned to normal though.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing!

Hi Nancy,

Yes, I take Zofran (ondansetron) 8 mg and it works great. I bought some ginger ale and need to try it. I heard it is very good for nausea.

At this point I don't know which treatment plan he will be using. I get an itchy rash from the Velcade but use aloe vera gel on it and it helps. After weeks the color goes away.

My weekly blood work has been really good and the doctor is pleased that it is so good. I can't wait until my cancer numbers come in and see how they are doing.

Thank you for your concern.

Nora
