I was rear-ended by a utility truck on the highway June 23, 2015. The CAT scan taken in the emergency room saw indicators of possible multiple myeloma in my upper spine. Upon my return home, an appointment was scheduled with my PCP. He referred me to an oncologist. Several tests were run, all came out negative for cancer. However, I was getting weaker and weaker, and experiencing bone pain. Finally a bone marrow biopsy was performed February 8, 2016. This is when the multiple myeloma was identified. Treatment started immediately. As of November 2016, I have been in remission.
All I can say is ' Thank God for the auto accident.' They never would have identified the multiple myeloma otherwise.

Re: Ronald, diagnosed after an auto accident
Ronald,
Welcome to the Beacon. Your story is familiar. My diagnosis was preceded by a routine annual physical in which my PCP spotted excess protein in a standard 24-hour urine test. I then was sent to kidney specialist. That led later to an oncologist, who diagnosed me after additional tests with Stage II multiple myeloma. Many of us have similar stories. You, like many of us, were symptom free or we had gotten used to the mild symptoms and did not recognize anything unusual. Many pass off fatigue as work related stress or just getting older. I am glad you are in remission and hope you can stay that way for a long time.
