Remission, remission, remission - what is it?

by PeterJ23 on Tue Jan 28, 2014 2:11 am

Newbie to the forum, followed for a while.

My mum has undertaken her SCT in Dec 2013, pulled up well, and was told today that she is in 'Partial remission'. Obviously complete remission was the dream, but not to be.

Her paraprotein is at 7, and there is said to be <10% of M cells in the bone marrow, light chains are back to normal. She'll enter maintenance stage soon, and we'll progress from here.

Really, just want to understand what 'partial remission' is, people who are in it/gone through it, your thoughts would be most greatly appreciated. Is your life any different, treatment, side effects etc.

Is it possible that paraprotein will continue to go down, or is a complete response or very good partial response possible over the next few months?

Lastly, how long can it take for STC to 'kick in'?

Loads of questions, i'd be grateful to read your replies.

:)

Your mother is very early in the recovery process from a transplant. Partial remission, or response, is a good thing. Her bone marrow biopsy results are really good. It took me 7-8 months before I reached complete response to the transplant. I came out of the transplant at the same m-spike level that I went into the transplant. So, your mother may still achieve a lower m-spike.

Have patience. As long as your mother is feeling good and the doctor is pleased, there really isn't anything more to worry about for now.

Many thanks for the replies,

I guess what i'm hearing is that a drop in the M-spike over the next few months is a possibility, and with maintenance therapy, this too may drop the spike?

Cheers

Hi Pete! Don't be discouraged. Took me over 6 months and a few rounds of Revlimid before I reached CR. HANG IN THERE!! ;)
