Meaning of random UPEP result

by Upperwestsider on Tue Apr 19, 2016 7:21 pm

Greetings.

I'm new to this forum, haven't been diagnosed, and have a simple question that I'm hoping the collective wisdom of this group could clarify for me.

A random urine UPEP test came back with the result of 7 mg/dl. No normal range accompanied this test.

If someone on this forum could shed some light, I would be grateful. Many thanks!

Although I can't tell you specific knowledge regarding that test, I have heard that it could be normal to have some protein in the urine. Did you discuss with the doctor and is an SPEP to be performed? That is more definitive a test. Good luck.

Upperwestsider,

Several things can cause proteineuria (protein in one's urine) and it turns out to be a fairly common finding in patients. As JPC mentioned, a serum protein electophoresis (SPEP) test would be a good test to get as as a follow-up to eliminate multiple myeloma as a cause. I would also ask for a serum protein immunofixation test if you are going to ask for an SPEP test.

But in any case, I wouldn't jump to any sort of conclusion that something as nasty as multiple myeloma might be the cause of your reading.

Thanks very much for your reply! I really appreciate it.

My doctor ordered several tests, including random UPEP test, in order to explore symptoms I've been having (hematuria, legs with pitting edema, fatigue, thirst, rib pain), along with radiation exposure. I'll see what follow-up tests he recommends now.

Thanks again!
