Prostate cancer and multiple myeloma

by Castaway on Tue Oct 13, 2015 11:21 am

Hello all,

I finally was able to take care of a lot of family things that will allow me to have my stem cell transplant in January. However, I just recently had labs done by my family practitioner at my annual physical and it indicated a rise in my PSA.

I did see a urologist specializing in prostate issues. He did another lab with PSA total, free and percentage free results. PSA total range is 0.000-4.000, mine is 4.532. It appears that I could have a 32.9 % chance of prostate cancer. Also just had a prostate biopsy. I will be getting my results and next visit with the urologist next week. Just playing the waiting game now.

I let my myeloma specialist know about my situation, and she said that "IF" I need some type of surgery for my prostate issues, I should have that taken care of way before any stem cell transplant. Also allow time for healing. I have done the stem cell harvest already. Glad to have those waiting for me.

Just wondering if anyone has had any prostate issues along with multiple myeloma and how that affected a possible stem cell transplant.

Thank You, Castaway

Dear Castaway,

My husband is the one with multiple myeloma but he actually had prostate cancer in November 2009, and five years later was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He had radiation to eliminate his prostate cancer, and that appeared to be successful. We often wonder if the radiation may have had a role in triggering the myeloma. Of course, we have no evidence to support that idea.

My husband is Day +66 from his stem cell transplant, and he is actually starting to feel "normal" for the first time in 16 months. From his experience I would say that you should be in good condition prior to the stem cell transplant because it "kicked his butt."

From our experience at MD Anderson with multiple myeloma, we have become aware of prostate cancer treatments that were not available to us in our home state. We would have made different decisions had we known and we would have gone to a major cancer facility like MD Anderson for his treatment.
