Post-transplant treatment regimen (if any)?

by LadyLib on Fri Feb 21, 2014 1:54 am

My husband is about 55 days post transplant. He met with his post transplant care team. They told him that they wanted to possibly start him on Velcade every 2 weeks as a precaution under 100 days although his results look relatively normal.

Seems a bit premature. However, what are your thoughts?

Hi LadyLib. The info notebook I received from Johns Hopkins indicated that you waited 100 days to see how your re-set bone marrow settled in. Before I left, they told me I'd go on Revlimid as a maintenance drug, which is what my home oncologist prescribed. I didn't start it until well after the 100 days had gone by and we saw where I was (CR at that time).

Has the transplant team discussed whether your husband is considered low, intermediate/standard or high risk? When my husband was approved for SCT about 4 months ago, the surgeon identified his disease as high risk. He prepared us for possible Velcade maintenance therapy as early as Day 40.

The discussion at time of transplant took into account the recent significant side effects of the CyBorD regimen. The surgeon decided to hold off on a maintenance recommendation until after SCT.

Hope that helps. Best of luck for a continuing recovery and better days ahead for you and your husband.

I can only relate my experience.

I was diagnosed in March of '09 and went through a regimen of Velcade/prednisone which put me in remission, no abnormal protein. I April of '10 I had a SCT, and while it was dicey for me, likely age related, I remained in remission until 3 months ago. I'm now showing a sharp increase in my Lambda and once again I have an M spike.

I have had no maintenance -- none. I'm hoping this gives me some advantage due to the fact my disease has only seen one drug in the 5 years since diagnosis.

Unfortunately the disease has no norm and my experience might not relate to his, but it is something to think about.

Thanks for the responses. My husband was initially diagnosed as High Risk, so I imagine they are trying to keep this thing away as much as possible. He is scheduled to start Velcade every 2 weeks at Day 70. Just want this to go away forever.
