Re: Concerned about possibilty of multiple myeloma

Well that 's good news that your PCP agreed to do the test and to refer to you an oncologist/hematologist :-)

I had low vitamin D as well. I can tell you I felt much better once I started supplementing. What has your doctor prescribed for you? Typically they will put you on a high dose once a week for two months and then a daily over the counter dose. Your vitamin D level is pretty low and at that level it can make you feel crummy. So just addressing that issue may help you a lot.

I am no doctor, but I can see why your physician is not concerned about major health issues since all your bloodwork is so good. Your protein levels are good too so that doesn't point to kidney problems at least.

To be quite honest, it's very possible that getting your vitamin D levels up to normal will make you feel much better. I know it did for me :-)

Let us know what the doctor suggested about that.

All the best!

My doctor just sent in a prescription to the pharmacy for a vitamin D supplement. I'm not exactly sure what the dose is but the nurse stated something that was much more than the daily dose and I will be taking it for a number of weeks. What you stated about two months sounds about right from what I remember talking to her on the phone.

Hopefully this will solve a majority of my problems. And I am very glad I do have a doctor that has agreed to send me to the hematologist. I am hoping that all the tests do come back negative and it is just the vitamin level that is making me feel so crappy all over.

I am also doing a round of physical therapy starting today. So hopefully the combination will help turn me around.

Thanks for the response and I'm glad that the vitamin D helped you out so much!

jshock1,

I was wondering if you ever had a urine sample analysis done? The foamy urine is usually an indication of abnormal protein in the urine, which would certainly need to be followed-up on. The first test is usually a regular urinalysis, but then followed by a 24 hour urine, where you collect your urine for 24 hours, and they look to see how much protein there is. There are many different things that can cause protein in the urine, but the first step would be to quantify how much there is.

Hi Tracy,

I have not had one done. I had a urine sample collected when I had my regular blood work done in January. However, my doctor did not tell me I would be doing a urine sample, so I managed to use the bathroom twice before I went so I had to drink water there in order to go. As I have read, it does take some time for protein to collect, and considering that was two months ago, the foamy urine is something that I have noticed more recently, in the last month or so.

I did ask my doctor to run a UPEP and she said she did not know what it was, so she is sending me to the hematologist / oncologist. My appointment is tomorrow. I also asked her for a referral to a nephrologist, but I am not sure when I can get in with them. I am hoping the hematologist orders a 24-hour sample tomorrow.

I am not sure if the amount of bubbles / foam is any indication, but I do know that I seem to have a lot and it is every time that I go now, whereas before it was only sometimes during the day.

Needless to say, this whole process of having lower back pain in November and being drug through the ringer for the past 3 months has been frustrating. As you can imagine, I am ready do get this figured out and work on fixing the problem, whatever it may be.

Thank you for your reply. I am still hoping it is something easy to fix and not myeloma, kidney disease, or any associated issues!

Hi, just wanted to comment on the protein urine issue. I have trace proteins in mine and, yes, it is foamy, like dish water foam. Your family doctor can do a urine "dipstick" and it checks for protein in the doctor's office.

Hi Everyone,

I have received some test results from my doctor.

CBC - Online test report

  Range My Result
WBC Count 3.4-10.8 6.3
Hgb 12.6-17.7 15.6
Platelets 150-379 252
Neutrophils Absolute 1.4-7.0 4.1

For some reason, the rest of the CBC isn't available to me. I'm not sure if that is because the doctor only wanted me to see these results (because he thought they were important, or he is waiting to discuss the rest with me on Thursday) Although I am hoping if it was something alarming they would have called me!

CMP - Online Test Report

  Range My Result
Glucose (serum) 65-99 88
Blood Urea Nitrogen 6-20 10
Sodium 134-144 139
Potassium 3.5-5.2 4.4
Creatinine 0.76-1.27 0.92
Calcium 8.7-10.2 9.6
Bilirubin Total 0.0-1.2 0.5
Alkaline Phosphatase 39-117 89
AST (SGOT) 0-40 18
ALT (SGPT) 0-44 21

Same issue with this test, not all of the information is available.

SPEP - Online Test Report

P E Interpretation, S - The SPE pattern appears essentially unremarkable. Evidence of monoclonal protein is not apparent.

  My Result Range
A/G Ratio 1.4 1 0.7-2.0
Globulin, Total 3.0 g/dL 2.0-4.5
M-Spike Not Observed Not Observed
Gamma Globulin 1.2 g/dL 0.5-1.6
Beta Globulin 0.8 g/dL 0.6-1.3
Alpha-2-Globulin 0.7 g/dL 0.4-1.2
Alpha-1-Globulin 0.2 g/dL 0.1-0.4
Albumin 4.3 g/dL 3.2-5.6
Protein, Total, Serum 7.3 g/dL 6.0-8.5

Free Kappa and Lambda Light Chains

  Range My Result
Kappa Free Light Chain 3.30-19.40 8.61
Lambda Free Light Chain 5.71-26.30 10.24

I'm hoping all of this means good news. I am still awaiting the UPEP and creatinine / protein urine test as well. Hopefully those will be good as well. Also since my serum creatinine was within the normal range, and slightly lower than January's blood test, I'm hoping that is good too.

However, I did notice that my platelets fell slightly by (12), my WBC's went up by (0.5) and my hemoglobin fell by (0.9)

I'm not sure if that is an issue, or just normal fluctuation. I am guessing the later though.

Will you keep you posted on the other information I receive and hopefully it is all good.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and God bless.
