Bone marrow plasma cell percentage at diagnosis?
I was just wondering is there an "average" bone marrow that is infected at diagnosis [bone marrow plasma cell percentage]? My mom is at 35% at diagnosis. Is that pretty average?
Re: Bone marrow plasma cell percentage at diagnosis?
MIne was 85% at diagnosis but down to less than 5% after 6 cycles of induction RVD [Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone].

80% at diagnosis. Dropped to 0% after 5 rounds of RVD.

Re: Bone marrow plasma cell percentage at diagnosis?
50% was the number told me by a physician involved in my care. This was very frightening to me, since I could imagine that my blood production was being altered, and also that the monoclonal protein being produced by the myeloma would also cause all sorts of health problems eventually, if not checked.
Four cycles of Velcade plus dex brought me into a VGPR. This is why I did, and still do consider Velcade to be a 'miracle drug'!
However, I realize that every patient is different and that what works for one patient may not work for another.
I think that Velcade was only the second novel agent to be approved in Alberta, after Thalomid. Revlimid was not approved yet when I started treatments, and as far as I know is still not approved for initial therapy.

I just wanted to say that it's not the percent of bone marrow that is infected, since while infection may or may not have a role in the pathogenesis of myeloma, the bone marrow number that we are talking about is the percentage of bone marrow cells that are plasma cells.

Hello Hopeful27,
I don't know what the average is, but my husband had 83-85% in his bone marrow at diagnosis in May 2011. He's in stringent complete remission now thanks to Kyprolis and Revlimid. No transplant yet according to his choice.
Best wishes to your mother and you as she starts this journey. After you read through the many questions and replies that are posted here in the Beacon, you and your mother will see there is a lot of positive and hopeful information that multiple myeloma patients can focus on.

Hello, not sure about Dan's percentage at diagnosis, but after auto stem cell, day 100 ish, his biopsy came back at 100 percent, his consultant said, it was a myeloma hot spot. Dan is now on dex, Pomalyst [pomalidomide] and cyclophosphamide [Cytoxan], but paraprotein level going up, now at 15. Consultant says he's running out of treatment options.
