Paul from Melbourne, diagnosed in September 2016

by canta on Wed Nov 09, 2016 9:17 pm

Hello to all,

I'm not normally one to share life experiences with strangers, but I came across this forum while researching multiple myeloma and found it to be a great source of information and relative comfort.

I was diagnosed on 26 September, 2016 and as with most patients here I was completely surprised. I had no symptoms and I was merely going for a check up because I had turned 50. I have been an extremely fit and healthy person my whole life and hadn't even had a cold for the last two years, so the diagnosis really came out of left field for me.

After the initial shock and going through the whole range of emotions, I am now very focused on doing whatever has to be done to extend my life for as long as possible, I owe it to my wife and three beautiful girls to commit 100% to do whatever it takes.

Reading the posts on this forum have given me great hope, and I will now strap myself in and go for this ride, I am determined to to get through this and still live a long and happy life even though it's going to be hard work and at times extremely difficult,

I feel I am mentally prepared for the challenge. I find a lot of comfort in surfing, all my worries and stresses seem to sink into the ocean and the only concern I have when I'm in the water is catching the next wave.

I wish everyone on this forum the best of luck and look forward to sharing in everyone's experiences.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hear your news. Like you, I was never one to open up and talk, especially about my health issues. But since being diagnosed back in April, that has changed.

You'll find lots of good information from the Beacon as well as support. Over time, you learn more about your disease if you chose to from others.

I have young beautiful daughters like you. They are my world. Yes, it's hard, but we have to blank out the negative thoughts. That part takes lots of time. Sometimes you will read some sad patient stories, but also plenty of poisitive stories. Everyone's myeloma is different, that's for sure.

All the best with your treatment plan and good luck.

Regards,
Dean
