Pamisol IV (pamidronate, Aredia)

by GregSydney on Fri Apr 15, 2016 5:53 pm

I will commence treatment of Pamisol (pamidronate, Aredia) in 2 weeks. I will be having a stem cell transplant in 4-5 months, all going well.

My understanding of Pamisol is it is used to prevent excessive breakdown of bones. I thought that only happened in Stage 3 of multiple myeloma. Am I wrong in assuming that? Is anyone aware of other uses for Pamisol?

With 4 new medications to discuss, this question slipped my mind, and I don't see my doctor for another 4 weeks.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Cheers
Greg

Greg,

Bisphosponates such as pamidronate or zoledronic acid (Zometa) can be prescribed for most stages of myeloma, including smoldering multiple myeloma and sometimes MGUS. Reduced bone density (not just bone damage from lytic lesions, etc) can be reason enough for a doctor to prescribe one of these drugs.

Some specialists even recommend bisphosphonate use for all patients being treated for multiple myeloma, even in the absence of bone damage or reduced bone density.
