Pain after central line insertion

by gardengirl on Wed Oct 21, 2015 3:43 pm

Is it normal to have pain after insertion of a central line, to the point where you can't lift your arm up?

Hello GG:

When they inserted the PICC line for my wife earlier this year, it caused her a black and blue mark that lasted 3 weeks. We were advised that this was very rare. They do have to manipulate it to get it in. It ultimately went away with no long term effect.

I would definitely let the medical team know to look at it to be on watch in case it is something that needs to be looked at. Hopefully, the pain and impact subsides over the next several days (as it did for my wife). I am guessing that would be the most likely outcome; however, it should be tracked closely. Good luck.

I went through this last month and had no such problem. I had difficulty in sleeping - using pillow - almost all nights and mild pain for couple of days even after it was removed.
