Orthovisc (hyaluronan, hyaluronic acid) and MGUS

by DianeM on Thu May 12, 2016 8:42 pm

Hi,

About a month ago I visited an orthopedic doctor with knee pain. An MRI confirmed a slightly torn meniscus with age related arthritis (I'm 60). The cortisone shot did not work and now the doctor is recommending Orthovisc (3 injections of hyaluronan / hyaluronic acid over 3 weeks) to lubricate knee joint.

I'm all set to go forward with the injections and told a friend. She also had the same knee issue and was about to get Orthovisc, but her doctor said because of her past history of breast cancer he did not recommend hyaluronic acid because it would increase her risk of cancer returning. She had arthroscopic surgery instead.

I've had MGUS for 4.5 years that appears stable. Have found sketchy info, but nothing stating Orthovisc is a direct cause of cancer. Since MGUS is a precancerous state, I'm concerned Orthovisc could enhance transition.

Is anyone aware of risks associated with MGUS progression and Orthovisc? I asked for the arthroscopic surgery and ortho doctor does not recommend it.

Thanks, Diane
