As I mentioned in a separate forum thread, my father, who lives in St. Petersburg, Russia, was diagnosed in 2003 with multiple myeloma. He has been treated with various treatment regimens since his diagnosis.
Right now, he is undergoing dialysis due to kidney problems, and he has developed a lot of lytic lesions. He is in a lot of pain.
My dad has been taking tramadol for half a year now and he cannot do without. Should he continue taking painkillers? Are there other options?

Re: Options for controlling severe pain?
Hello Anni,
You ask about painkillers. I have taken all the usual suspects, which are morphine based. I found that, while they worked somewhat for the pain, they also caused other side effects that I sure didn't like. I started to wean myself of off them, gradually reducing the amount. I went to the local hospital, where they had a course in pain management. The best thing i picked up there was "mindful meditation". Google it. It has allowed me to be relatively pain free, without the mental confusion of opiates, for about 6 years now.
I have occasionally gone back to the pills, mostly from hospital visits, but gone off of them as soon as I could. It's a much better way to go through the day! I also use marijuana as a relaxant, and find that it not only allows me much needed rest, but also helps with the pain. I have gotten used to having constant pain, but it is manageable.
This works for me, but everyone is different. It may, or may not work.

Re: Options for controlling severe pain?
Hello Anni,
If you do a search from the forum search box on "pain", you will find previous discussions about dealing with pain. Just as some examples:
"Pain management for bone pain" (started Aug 22, 2014)
"Extreme bone pain" (started Oct 28, 2011)
"Treatment for compression fracture in spine?" (started Nov 28, 2015)
