Omega-3 fatty acids may induce myeloma cell apoptosis?

I only have access to the abstract. But both my GP and one of my hem/oncs had already encouraged me to take a fish oil supplement.

It's hard to draw many conclusions based on just the abstract. Also, remember that this test was only done in vitro. But it's encouraging to know this as I take my giant, daily gel-pill full of fish oil ;-)

Abstract:

The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been shown to enhance the effect of chemotherapeutic drugs in clinical studies in cancer patients and to induce apoptotic tumor cell death in vitro. Until now, EPA and DHA have never been investigated in multiple myeloma (multiple myeloma). Human myeloma cells (L363, OPM-1, OPM-2 and U266) and normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells were exposed to EPA and DHA, and effects on mitochondrial function and apoptosis, caspase-3 activation, gene expression and drug toxicity were measured. Exposure to EPA and DHA induced apoptosis and increased sensitivity to bortezomib in multiple myeloma cells. Importantly, they did not affect viability of normal human peripheral mononuclear cells. Messenger RNA expression arrays showed that EPA and DHA modulated genes involved in multiple signaling pathways including nuclear factor (NF) κB, Notch, Hedgehog, oxidative stress and Wnt. EPA and DHA inhibited NFκB activity and induced apoptosis through mitochondrial perturbation and caspase-3 activation. Our study suggests that EPA and DHA induce selective cytotoxic effects in multiple myeloma and increase sensitivity to bortezomib and calls for further exploration into a potential application of these n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the therapy of multiple myeloma.

Multibilly,

I received my ASCT at Roswell Park Cancer Institute with my attending physician being a known multiple myeloma specialist. He and others at Roswell were very hesitant on supplements. I understand that multiple myeloma is a diverse cancer, but should I challenge their thoughts on this matter?

Again, I suffered a lot of bone involvement / damage, so anything that could slow progression of the disease would be comforting.

Kully,

I am by no means qualified to challenge your doctors. I clear all of my supplement usage with both my GP and my onc and I would defer to their opinion if they took exception to one of the supplements I currently take.

But remember that I'm only smoldering, which is a completely different ballgame than a symptomatic multiple myeloma patient who is undergoing treatment or is on maintenance.

Very Interesting. I eat a lot of salmon and in 2011, when I was receiving Velcade for my induction therapy, I was taking fish oil supplements. I normally do not buy them. My mother bought them for me and I knew they did no harm and were healthy in general. Velcade almost put me in complete remission before my SCT.

Over the years, I have seen a lot articles on how a particular food, food ingredient, or compound has some anti-myeloma properties and works well with the novel agents in enhancing the effectiveness of the treatments. These are supported by actual studies using the scientific method, mostly by in vitro testing – in vivo is much more scarce. Though I do not expect that some miracle cure for myeloma remains to be discovered in some food or supplement, it seems a great deal of what we eat does have some effect on myeloma cancer cells and can work with or against the treatments we are prescribed.

There probably is a lot more yet to be discovered. I suspect a carefully developed diet with food and other supplements that are known to have some anti-myeloma effects in concert with the novel agents used to treat myeloma may give results far better than with novel agents alone with no consideration of diet. It would be interesting to see some research group take this up and study it with some rigor or trials.

I take one tablespoon of organic flax seed oil daily, no worries of mercury found in fish oil.

It looks like I will be starting on Velcade again next week. Last time I was on that drug was 4 years ago. I remember reading this post and found it again. I plan to get lots of Omega-3 while on Velcade because of the findings in the link MultiBilly posted. I found the following articles interesting in the choice of what to take to get Omega-3. I thought others might be interested in them.

In this article the author provides data on the half-life of Omega 3 DHA and Omega-3 EPA in the body vs Omega-3 ALA from flaxseed oil. This is just someone’s blog statement so I do not know the accuracy of the information but it is interesting. I will search to see if I can find a solid source half-life data.

I read another article about the potential toxicity of fish oil from the buildup of toxins, primarily mercury and PCBs. There may be some concerns about fish oil derived from the livers of apex predators such as sharks, tuna, tilefish etc but fish oil derived from the whole fish was found to have negligible levels. And there are fish oils that come made from Krill. I see fish oil sold that is sourced from Alaska commonly available in many stores. Would Alaskan waters be expected and the fish caught and oil made from those fish be expected to have less toxin concerns than fish oil from other parts of the world? I think it would but I really do not know.
