I wanted to share my frustration with doctors. Let me start off by saying that I am an RN, so I should know better. Being an RN,I have been conditioned to not question doctors.
I am high risk smoldering with an abnormal FLC ratio and 3 of the 4 chromosomal mutations. I have an autoimmune disorder as well. My rheumatologist recently prescribed Meloxicam, an NSAID. I questioned the rheumatologist about the safety of this med to my kidneys. She actually said "if you go into renal failure, we can treat that to save the kidneys"! I reminded her that I really need to baby my kidneys. Her attitude was, if we damage them, we will deal with it. My hematologist was, of course, livid. So....NO NSAIDS. No Mortin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen. If you don't feel comfortable with something a doctor says, question it. Doctors are not God. Find one you trust 100%.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: NSAIDS
Go ahead and vent. Doctors are not God and can make mistakes or show poor judgement or manners at times. My daughter recently gave birth and I took her to the emergency room 2 times in one week. I knew something was not right. She had severe back pain, swollen legs, 105 fever and a history of IV drug abuse. (She is clean now). Doctors and nurses kept saying it was just sciatica pain and a UTI. The first doctor sends her home. On the next visit, the doctor hears a heart murmur and now we know she has endocarditis. I am glad I continued to bring her in and question why she was sick and in pain. We are now at week 4 of round the clock IV antibiotics and she will need a heart valve replacement. She has also had a nurse and doctor try to change meds on her which would have made her sick. I told her to always ask what is the medicine and what is it for. She caught the mistake and refused to take it until someone got the subscribing doctors permission. Her doctor got involved and made them get the correct medicine. I wonder why no one discovered this condition sooner? Why did her OB doctor never hear a heart murmur and the first ER doctor not hear? Bottom line is, we all need to be our own advocate. It is our health, our life. We should be working as partners with our doctor.
