Nosebleeds

by royjulius on Sun May 05, 2013 3:39 pm

Hi. I am trying to find a solution, if there is one, to my girlfriend's nosebleeds. She has had multiple myeloma for 6 years and I'm aware that this is a symptom of high M proteins. I would just like to ask if anyone has a solution to making them stop once they've started. We're on our way to the ER for the 3rd time because it started bleeding this morning and won't stop. She has had cauterization, and I tried some over-the-counter things in vain. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

She is probably critically low on platelets. A transfusion of platelets will probably help a lot.

Thanks. She gets a regular transfusion about every 3-4 weeks, is there a transfusion that is just platelets? We spent the entire day in the ER Sunday, they did some cauterizing (again) and we'll see an ear-nose-and-throat guy later this week.

Update...we finally found a good ear-nose-and-throat guy and he did some better cauterization. So far so good. Now to get busy trying to help those muscle cramps.

We went thru hell again at the ER over the weekend with the nosebleeds. This time they snaked a catheter up through her groin area all the way to her face and implanted some micro beads to block some of the arterial flow. She's home now and not bleeding. Thank God there was a surgeon in town that could perform this operation. They said her septum is deviated so there is a part of her nose that they couldn't cauterize without surgery, and that she prolly wouldn't survive surgery, so they tried this and so far it worked. I wish she would try Pom, it might get her platelets up.
