Normal SPEP, but something's not right

by sperkins on Sat Oct 18, 2014 2:20 pm

Hi,

If your SPEP came back normal, what steps did they take to find out you have myeloma?

I had a normal SPEP but since then, I've lost feeling in part of my left leg and had something that mimicked a stroke that passed after a couple hours. I am so sick of being told I'm young and healthy no matter what is going on. I need some guidance for sure.

Hi Sperkins,

Did you get evaluated for your stroke-like episode??? That epsiode and losing feeling in your leg sounds serious.

You really can't diagnose any stage of multiple myeloma with just an SPEP. Ideally, you would also want to run all the tests listed in the Laboratory Tests section here:

http://myeloma.org/pdfs/IMF-U-TestResults-2011_f1web.pdf

If those tests showed an indication of something like multiple myeloma, then you would move on to the imaging and pathology tests.

I am not a doc by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think the kinds of symptoms you are mentioning here are the sort of symptoms that would be attributable to multiple myeloma. But that call should really be made by a doctor.

In any case, you clearly want to be seen by a good doctor ASAP.

Neither of those symptoms would be indicative of multiple myeloma. Stroke like?

The leg neuropathy would be more indicative of a spinal problem in the lower back. Don't get me wrong, some do have that problem with multiple myeloma, but for it to stand alone would be unlikely.
